One of the best European power forwards switched Turkish Airlines EuroLeague powerhouses, as Fenerbahce announced the arrival of Achille Polonara, who signed a two-year deal, with an option for a third season, with his new team on Tuesday. Polonara (2.02 meters, 29 years old) arrives from TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, where he averaged 12.2 points on 44.3% three-point shooting, 6.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 0.9 blocks in 33 EuroLeague games last season. He ranked second in rebounds only behind Edy Tavares of Real Madrid (8.0 rpg.) and was 11th in PIR average.

Polonara improved in every stats category, as he averaged 3.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and a PIR of 4.2 in the 2019-20 campaign. He helped Baskonia lifted the Spanish League trophy in 2020, dishing a decisive assist to Luca Vildoza for the title-winning layup. Polonara started his career with Teramo and also played for Varese, Reggio Emilia and Sassari of his native Italy before joining Baskonia. He has also been a member of the Italian national team. Polonara helped Italy win a silved medal at the 2011 U20 European Championships, and lifted the FIBA Europe Cup trophy with Sassari in 2019.

Fenerbahce adds power forward Polonara

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul brought back a familiar face by signing forward Metecan Birsen for the next two seasons with an option for the third year, the club announced Tuesday. Birsen (2.08 meters, 26 years old) spent the last two years with Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir, where he averaged 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in the Turkish League, while posting 6.4 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Basketball Champions League. Birsen now returns to his boyhood club.

Birsen had a very successful career in the junior ranks. While playing for U18 Fenerbahce, as a 17-year old, he was the MVP of the 2012 Adidas Next Generation Tournament Finals. He also made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut with Fenerbahce in the 2013-14 campaign, when he appeared in eight games. Birsen made seven more appearances with Anadolu Efes Istanbul in the 2018-19 season. During his career Birsen has also played with Eskisehir, Istanbul BB and Sakarya Buyuksehir. As a standout in youth categories, Birsen helped Turkey to gold medals at the U18 European Championship in 2013 and the U20 European Championship in 2014.

Fenerbahce reunites with Birsen

LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne has signed one of the top prospects in basketball, Victor Wembanyama, to a three-year deal, the club announced Tuesday. Wembanyama (2.20 meters, 17 years old) arrives from fellow French side Nanterre 92, with which he made his professional debut two years ago as a 15-year-old and saw his role grow last season.

Wembanyama appeared in four games in the 7DAYS EuroCup, including an impressive 4-block effort against Cedevita Olimpija Zagreb. He also posted 5 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 17:29 that night. He played more in the French League, where he finished the season with 6.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.9 blocks over 17 minutes per game in 18 appearances. Wembanyama was also an All-Tournament selection at the U16 European Championships after leading France to the silver medal.

Zvezda brings in forward White

White (2.06 meters, 28 years old) arrives from Panathinaikos OPAP Athens, where he averaged 7.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in 33 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season. He helped Panathinaikos win the Greek double - league and cup titles - in 2021. He spent his first two EuroLeague season helping Zalgiris Kaunas go further in the competition than at any point this century. He averaged 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds as Zalgiris reached the 2018 Final Four in his rookie EuroLeague season and helped the team return to the playoffs in 2019. He shot 57.9% on two-pointers over that two-year period and had the second-highest total scoring, 602 points, behind only Brandon Davies.

Before joining Zalgiris, White played two seasons in the 7DAYS EuroCup, first with Telekom Baskets Bonn and then with Zenit St Petersburg, averaging 10.1 points and 5.6 over a total of 26 games. He has also played for AX Armani Exchange Milan of Italy and Iberostar Tenerife of Spain. In 118 EuroLeague career games with Zalgiris, Milan and Panathinaikos, White has averaged 7.4 points and 3.8 rebounds.

There are many metrics that show that the 2020-21 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague was the closest and most competitive ever. From the tight regular-season standings, through three playoff series that went the distance to the semifinals decided in the closing seconds and a thrilling championship game, the EuroLeague season provided drama and excitement at every turn.

One of the ways the thrills could be seen was the fact there were so many close games. So many that CSKA Moscow, which finished the regular season tied for the league's best record at 24-10, became the first team in competition history to win six consecutive games by less than 10 points.

The streak began in Round 6 with an 84-75 victory over Valencia Basket. It continued with a 6-point road win at Panathinaikos OPAP Athens, a 3-point triumph at home over TD Systems and wins at Zalgiris Kaunas by 9 and FC Bayern Munich by 8 before it defeated Real Madrid 74-73 in Round 11. The CSKA streak only ended because it trounced Olympiacos Piraeus 80-61.

CSKA went on to win 12 games in a row, with three-quarters of those coming by less than 10 points. For the season, 16 of CSKA's regular-season wins were by single digits as were seven of its 10 defeats.

The Muscovites were not the only team with many close calls this season. In fact, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, came close to matching CSKA’s fresh mark when it won five straight games by less than 10 points between Rounds 22 and 26.

Before ASVEL, the last team to win five straight games by less than 10 points was Maccabi Tel Aviv the season before, 2019-20. The Israeli champs actually won five straight by one shot between Rounds 23 and 27 with two victories by 3 points, one by 2 points and two by a single point. Maccabi was on the wrong side of the razor's edge this past season when it lost 10 games by less than 5 points, which was the most ever by a team in the current EuroLeague format

As basketball fans, what more could we ask for than close games decided in the final minutes – or even better, the final seconds? The 2020-21 season delivered that way time and time again. 

CSKA Moscow became the first team in EuroLeague history to win six consecutive games by less than 10 points.

CSKA streak shined a light on 2020-21's many close games

FC Barcelona reached an agreement with versatile forward Sergi Martinez that will keep him with the club through the end of the 2023-24 season, the club announced Monday. Martinez (2.02 meters, 22 years old) averaged 1.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 26 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season. He helped Barcelona win the Spanish League and Cup double and reach the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Championship Game.

Martinez joined Barcelona in his early teens and played for the club's youth squads, as well as for its second division team. He led U18 FC Barcelona to the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament title in 2016 with 17 points and 7 rebounds in the championship game against U18 Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. Martinez made his first team debut in the 2019-20 campaign and became a full-time member of the squad last season. Martinez has also played for the Spanish national team at youth levels and helped it win silver medals at the 2019 U20 European Championships and the 2017 U18 European Championships.

Barcelona extends forward Martinez

ALBA Berlin ensured that homegrown talent Malte Delow will remain with the club for four more seasons after signing the guard to a his first professional contract.

ALBA locks up Berliner Delow through 2025

Delow (1.94 meters, 20 years old) cracked the ALBA rotation last season, his second with the senior squad. He averaged 1.6 points in 23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague appearances and 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 38 German League games. Delow, who first joined ALBA when he was 12 years old, is playing with Gemrany's Under-20 team this summer.

I am happy that I was able to sign my first professional contract with ALBA and that I can continue to play in my hometown,” Delow said. “The decision to stay at ALBA was very easy for me: Here I find an optimal sporting environment in which to develop myself at the highest level over the next few years. It's also great fun to be part of the culture that ALBA has created here. I can hardly wait to play in front of many fans again in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

UNICS Kazan and big man John Brown have signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club through the end of the 2023-24 season, the club announced Monday. Brown (2.03 meters, 29 years old) averaged 10.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 24 games in the 7DAYS EuroCup last season. He helped UNICS reach the EuroCup and the VTB United League finals. Brown finished the EuroCup season with 45 steals (1.9 spg.), the third-most by any player in competition history, and was chosen as the VTB League's best defender.


Brown joined UNICS from Happy Casa Brindisi, where he averaged 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 21 Italian League games in the 2019-20 season. He also played for Acea Virtus Roma and DeLonghi Treviso Basket. Brown helped Brindisi reach the Italian Cup final 2019 and 2020. He is set to make his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut with UNICS this season.

UNICS keeps All-EuroCup big man Brown

Nikos Zisis, one of the greatest guards in European basketball this century, has announced that he is retiring from life as a basketball player. Zisis, who will turn 38 in August, started his professional career with AEK Athens and went full circle by finishing it with the same team. He made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut in style by starting in a playoff game against Benetton Basket Treviso at the age of 17.

Zisis played for AEK from 2000 to 2005; he helped it win the Greek Cup in 2001 and the Greek League championship in 2002. They also made an appearance in the EuroLeague semifinals in the competition's original season, 2000-01. He also played for Benetton Treviso and Montepaschi Siena of Italy, CSKA Moscow of Russia, Bilbao Basket and Joventut Badalona of Spain, UNICS Kazan of Russia, Fenerbahce Istanbul of Turkey, and Brose Bamberg of Germany. EuroLeague legend Vassilis Spanoulis, one of his best friends, also retired from basketball two days ago.

Zisis helped CSKA win the EuroLeague in 2008 and reach the championship game in 2009. He played two other EuroLeague Final Fours, with Siena in 2011 and Fenerbahce in 2015. He won the Italian Cup with Benetton in 2007 and added Italian League and Cup doubles with Siena in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Zisis also lifted the Russian Cup with UNICS in 2014, won German League titles with Bamberg in 2017 and 2018 captured German Cup crowns with the same team in 2017 and 2019, in which he hit the championship-winning shot with 2.4 seconds left. He has also reached 7DAYS EuroCup Finals with Bilbao in 2013 and UNICS in 2014.

In 310 EuroLeague career games with AEK, Benetton, CSKA, Siena, Fenerbahce, UNICS and Bamberg, Zisis amassed 2,140 points (6.9 ppg.) and 885 assists (2.9 apg.). He owns the EuroLeague record for consecutive games played with 209. Zisis amassed 430 points (8.3 ppg.) and 178 assists (3.4 apg.) over three EuroCup seasons with Bilbao, UNICS and Joventut. He was also very successful in his 189 games with the Greek national team, which included a gold medal at EuroBasket 2005, silver at the 2006 World Cup and bronze at EuroBasket 2009.

I loved basketball since I was a child, but I never imagined I would make such a big, exciting and unforgettable trip.
